Why Cheering for All-Time High Markets is Silly

2024 saw another great year for stocks in this very long bull market. All the indices were green again and are around all-time high levels.

And everyone is feeling great. Just keep buying. Buy and hold. Time in the market beats timing the market. Here is my weekly tweet showing me buying more shares of Vanguard.

Life is good.

I mean look at this chart of the Nasdaq since 2009

Or if you aren’t a Qs kind of guy and prefer the SP500 (which at this point has so much overlap with Nasdaq due to tech stocks run it is basically the same thing)

The last 10 years you have seen 12%+ annualized growth on both the SP500 and Nasdaq. You know it because there is a plethora of gooroos telling you how just contributing money every paycheck to buying Vanguard large-cap ETFs will grow to huge amounts of money using the 12% growth rate.

Honestly, how could anyone find the negative in this. Everyone who was invested in stocks saw their portfolios grow and are richer….

Well in the words of my beloved Grandma F’er, let me be the one who put the ‘poop in the party punch bowl’.

Unless you are retired, cheering a huge run up in stocks is kind of silly. If that doesn’t make a lot of sense to you, then you need to read this one.
